Omela and the society of today

On my first read of "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas", I had thought of it as a very far away place, a place that perhaps does not even exist on the face of planet Earth, however after my second read and the discussion in class, my opinion on Omelas changed completely.

Never until reading this story had i realized the society today is actually very similar to the situation of Omelas. Omelas, an utopia where one person suffers for the sake of everyone else just as the world today, where a certain populations in the world works under dangerous conditions, long hours, lack of benefits and rights, just for a single meal.

The majority of the better off population is aware of the terrible conditions of the mentioned population, however only a very small amount of people attempt to make a difference. Which brings up the question of why only a small amount of people try to change this. After the people of Omelas see the suffering child in the closet, realize that the suffering of the child is what keeps their utopia perfect and just carry on with their lives, while some realize that the child's suffering was wrong but they don't have the power to do anything about it therefore they walk away. Similarly, there are children working in third world countries in inhuman working conditions producing the very clothing we are wearing now, yet we continue to wear and purchase more in order to sustain our living standards. They are often people that attempt to stand up for this cause, however this is a global issue and most global issues cannot be resolved overnight.

To think that everything I have taken for granted so far in life had been at the expenses of others. As much as I hate to admit, modern society now seems much further than perfection than it did before.
